Living the Word of God

These words of Jesus are so important for the time we live in today, with all the worldly influences that have come into our lives. The enemy knows how powerful the Word of God is and he (satan) is mustering every force and deception he can to keep us from studying God's precious Word.

Matthew 4:4 .....'It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.'

Word of God Notice how Jesus didn't say that we should live by " some" of the things that God says, but by EVERYTHING that He says. Now this can be a problem for many of us, because we tend to hang on to the " nice" words, and pass over the challenging ones. But instead of picking and choosing what words we want to follow, we should be seeking to obey God in everything that He commands and asks of us, and the only way we will find out how God desires us to live, is to diligently search the scriptures daily to find out the truth. Let's not just take someone else's words as truth either, instead, let us be like the Bereans and search the Word of God in the Bible ourselves to see if what we have been told is the truth.

Acts 17:11 .....'These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.'

Remember, we are not to live by the words of preachers and authors, but by EVERY WORD of our Creator God in the Bible. These words, although spoken by men, were inspired by God as confirmed in 2 Timothy 3:16. But notice something important that the Bereans did above. They received the word with all readiness of mind and THEN proceeded to check with the scriptures that what they heard was the Bible truth. So their minds were OPEN to receive the truth and they were not clouded with preconceived ideas and traditions like many of us are today. They were OPEN to be guided by God and His Word, and were ready to live according to it.

Now what happens if we only read and listen to God's Word without actually putting it into action in our own lives? Jesus said we don't just live by bread alone (food), which feeds the flesh, but we must also live by the Word which feeds the soul. Now take a look at the following Bible verse:

James 1:22 .....'But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.'

We must be doers of the Word, otherwise as the verse confirms, we will be deceived. It will be so easy for Satan to deceive us with any wind of doctrine if we don't put the true Word of God into practice in our lives. We must be diligent to heed the Word of God and live by it. Remember, we don't live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God, which we find in the Bible.

The Powerful Word of God

Hebrews 4:12 .....'For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.'

What a powerful tool we have in our grasp! Just look at what it can do! It exposes all forms of evil and through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Word can humble any heart and bring that person to their knees before God. Even Jesus, when tempted by the devil in the wilderness quoted scriture each time, saying "it is written".

The Word of God gives light to the lives of those who receive it, and hope to the hopeless. It exposes our sin and brings us to the feet of Jesus. This isn't just some novel that gives temporary pleasure, no, the Bible is the very Word of our awesome Creator God and promises all those who heed it an eternal life full of endless joy. We need to start living these powerful, precious, life giving Words of God.

Study the Word of God

If we didn't bother to eat food then our bodies would begin to die, and in the same way, if we don't bother to study the Word of life, then we will begin to die spiritually.

2 Timothy 2:15 .....'Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.'

As mentioned at the start, we need to be like the Bereans and study the Word of God in the Bible everyday. If we profess to be Christians but don't bother studying the Bible, then what are we saying? That would be like saying you like a certain author, but never read their books! It doesn't make sense, just as being a Christian and not reading the Bible doesn't make sense. No, we should love the Word of God and it should be a big part of our everyday lives. We need to test everything against it. Don't just take your preacher's word as truth, go home and check what he says against what God has said. Jesus Himself said that we need to worship God in spirit and truth, and it is only through Bible study that we can know how to do this in an acceptable way to God.

Just as the house built on sand will fall, if we build our faith on anything other than the true Word of God found in the Bible, it will not stand. The Word of God must be the ONLY authority on which we build our faith. If we plant our feet firmly on the Rock which is Christ Jesus and heed His Word, then we shall never fall.

James 1:21 .....'Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.'

Back in the dark ages when the Roman Catholic Church kept the Word of God in darkness, people were crying out for the precious truths that the Bible gives us, but now by the grace of God we have the Bible everywhere, in print, online and in digital format. Let us be thankful that we can easily access the Word of God and read of those most precious truths. Remember, man shall not live by bread alone, but by EVERY WORD of God!

The Unchanging Word of God

We live in a world that is ever changing, full of "religions" that are ever changing, but be assured, no matter what people do, no matter what people say, the Word of God NEVER changes! Don't let anyone persuade you that "times are changing and we need to change with them", no! we must hold on to the never changing Word of God. The Bible is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago.

Isaiah 40:8 .....'The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.'

Matthew 24:35 .....'Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.'

Our prayer is that you will not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God.
